About

Memories in Place is a research project being conducted as part of a PhD being undertaken at Open Lab at the School of Computing, Newcastle University. The aim of this project is to explore digital tools for exploring local heritage and see how these can be used to support community heritage projects and through this to encourage community participation in local areas.

This project has been created with the support of Remembering the Past, a charity led by volunteers who collect and manage an archive of recordings of stories and memories of North Tyneside.

Through the use of posters with QR codes participants are invited to scan the QR code to visit a web page through which they can listen to a recorded oral history memory relating to the location they are in. There is also the opportunity for participants to leave their own recordings. These will be collected by the researcher and may be used to support other research being carried out as part of their PhD. Recordings may be archived and stored in accordance with Newcastle University's Research Data Management Policy following the conclusion of this project.

Findings from this research may be used in research outputs including the PhD thesis and research papers submitted to conferences or academic publications. Any data used in these ways will be anonymised.
